THIRD AND LAST PERIOD!

FIRST CLASS

DESCRIBE
In my first class of the last period, I started the class with a little warm up which helped me interact with the students although I could notice they were a little shy and did not want to do what I said. Well, I was glad since I did not have to explain grammar this time. I was said that I just had to make some practices. Unfortunately, I realized that students were not so familiar with the topic, so I had to go back and explain a little bit about it. However, the students caught the idea and could make the exercises presented. This class, we worked with some problems that had to be solved with the pieces of advice the students could think of. I developed 3 activities which were really helpful for them to practice the structure. About sitting arrangement, I had a little trouble since some of the students did not want to move where they were asked, nonetheless, they could work and make groups to work on the activities. At the end of the class, I was happy because I developed my agenda and think I had done a great job.

PLAN ACTION
Next class, as always, I will try provide instructions in  the clearest way because it minimizes time and the students know exactly what to do. Besides that, I will give priority to the activities that I noticed have great impact to the students; and if it necessary, I will give more time to those activities. I do not have to be worried about finishing all my agenda in one class.
INTERPRET
GENERALIZE
When it is the first class, it is kind of hard to create a confidence among students, so it is important to look for appropriate activities that can help create a good atmosphere in the class. Also, the teacher has to be around students offering some help and at the same time knowing the students. When there is monitoring, the teacher has the  time to know how students work, what their weaknesses and strengths are when working either individually or in groups.
Based on this practice, I confirmed that organizing your time is really important because all the activities that have been planned have their own purpose. However, I have learned that sometimes it is ok not to stay with the agenda strictly because sometimes, it is necessary to give more time to the activities that are being helpful for students. Also, it is ok to change the order of the activities depending on how the group has been working during the class.

SECOND CLASS

DESCRIBE

In my second and last teaching practice, I tried to enjoy it to the fullest. However, it was kind of hard because of the observations about the past class. A warm up about mimics was the opening for this class. I noticed that students enjoyed it and remember some vocabulary that was going to be used during the class. I developed some activities in which students could practice not only speaking but also writing. There was an activity that students had to stand up and ask for some information to their classmates. Thank God, students liked it and complete the information. Unfortunately, the time was my enemy because they could not finish or complete the whole information. But after that we could check all the answers together to correct some of the sentences given. In the last activity, students made groups in order to talk and be creative when describing some objects. Although they had to use the structure given, they could do it successfully.

GENERALIZE
When there are many students, the best way to work is making groups or pairs. Nonetheless, it is important to monitor what they do since it is easier for them to get distracted. Working with someone else helps them to be more confidence about what they do and they can check their answers with their classmates to correct them. Sometimes students feel ashamed when the teacher corrects them, so let´s make it easier for them doing some pair or group work.
I have learned that grammar has to be explained in the most concise and clearest way because it helps students to be focused and to learn quickly. Also when explaining grammar, it is good to have a chart for giving some theory because when doing some practices, we could paste the chart on the wall for the students remember and take a look at it sometimes.

For the future, I plan to put into practice what I have learned through all these experiences in teaching. I know I have to work on giving instructions, pair work and organizing my time better. I plan to work on that to avoid future problems and to be a great teacher. I plan to keep learning to be creative and to help my future students.

SECOND PERIOD

First class, second period

DESCRIBE
Well, in this first class, I was a little bit intimidated since it was a large group, and as you know, it is more difficult to do all the activities planned on time. Moreover, the first class was about “phrasal verbs”. I don´t know why but I´ve always had to teach grammar in all my practices. So, it was kind of hard since I had to teach a limited amount of phrasal verbs which makes it difficult because when looking for activities, I found with a variety of phrasal verbs and most of them weren´t the ones I had to teach, so basically I had to create or “re make” (if I can say) the activities to adjust them to my class. However, I think they worked pretty well because I got good response from the students, and I noticed they got the grammar pretty well. However, something that failed was the time to develop the activities because I made them work individually and it took much time.

PLAN ACTION

GENERALIZE
When having a large group, it is very important to manage the time because they can take some minutes to do the exercises, and the teacher has to develop, at least, three activities which is not possible if students work individually.
Monitoring is relevant when having many students since they can get distracted easily. So to be walking around the classroom can help students to work, however, it is important to know that some of them can feel intimidated if I monitor them every second, so I have to give them space. I have to know my students to know when they need my help or when they need a little bit of pressure to work too.
I´m thinking about make the students work in groups or in pairs next time because it can help me not only to finish the activities quickly but also to check the exercises in less time. Also when students work with someone else, their confidence is higher and it is good for them to feel comfortable and sure about what they have done.

Second class, second period

DESCRIBE
in this class, I was happy because the topic was "much and many." I prepaared some activities that were really helpful. this time I made students work in pairs which helped me finish on time. also I noticed that they were correcting each other´s mistakes, so my help wasn´t so necessary as the first class. unfortunately there was an activity that make me sweat because it was divided into 2 activities, so as you know, I have troubles when giving instructions. well, I explained it ans somehow make it work. Thank God, I saw that students enjoyed the activity.

When having an activitiy with many instructions, it is necessary to make a chart or to look for a way in which students can get the idea quickly and develop the activity successfully. also it is good to develop activities related to real life to help students when they have to face real situations. "Much and Many" is good topic to make activities of real life.
I noticed that students enjoy activites in which they have to investigate or find out some information. With this kind of activities you can make them talk in order or find information about other people. it is important to give them much time if they are making oral exercise since the classroom id the only place where they can practice orally.
Next time, I will use a chart to give instructions and so minimize time when explaining. Also it will help students know what to do next in case they forget. also a chart is useful not only with instructions but also with grammar part. With a chart, it is not necessary to be writing and wasting time.

Second entry (3rd period)

DESCRIBE

I think this class was better than the last one because I was more confident about the activities I was developing. Also, one of the things I think helped was that I developed the exercises from the book. It was strange because in the last two periods I didn´t work with a book, so I had to look for many activities by myself without a book or lesson plan as a support. But this case, it was different since I had the book as a backup. I had to look for one free activity in which students stood up and work in pairs. I think that the results were good and I got a good feedback about my whole class. So I am happy because it was a good day at the practice.

GENERALIZE
Having a book as a support helps the teacher during the class since the book itself provides what to develop in the class. However, it is really important to look for information by ourselves to vary the activities and the students can move and get interested in the topic. It is good for the teacher and the students to get interested or focused on the topic in order to learn. Many students are kinesthetic learners so it is good not to keep them on their seats. Make them participate, talk or discuss are a good resources for the class.
Bringing interesting or controversial topic to the class is a very good idea because you make them think and analyze about it. Then they can share their personal opinions about those topics. For example, they liked to talk about capital punishment, abortion, lowering the age of having a driver´s license etc. I think they really like those topics because they were participating in class.
Next class, I plan to make a activity similar to the one I made today because I had a good feedback and could see the interest of the students to complete their task. Also, I plan to study deeply the exercises and words of the book because they always have questions or doubts about. So as a good teacher you need to go ahead your students.

First entry (third period)

DESCRIBE

I think that having to plan a class a day before teaching it is really stressful because the day passes so quickly that you don’t have time to investigate deeply about the topic and also to find the most accurate activities for your students. Moreover to be taking other subjects make it even more difficult, so, when doing our teaching practices, it becomes really difficult to teach. In my first class of the third period, I was sent to intermediate II, where I had to deal with one of the most difficult topics for me that was “The unreal conditional.” I think that this topic is difficult to teach from scratch (talking about grammar), but not to put it into practice. Also, I think it was a challenge because I couldn´t observe how the class was, and what kind of students I was going to deal with. I was really nervous because I had never been with them. I had to introduce myself because the teacher didn´t explain to the Ss I was going the practitioner this period. Besides that I felt weird since most of the students, that are boys, were thinking about the soccer game of the Real Madrid that was playing in that right moment, so they were distracted using their cellphones to know the score, etc. Unfortunately, I had to explain grammar (theoretical part) so I couldn´t develop many kinesthetic activities to get them distracted. Well, even though it wasn´t a really good day for me, I got a good grade at the end.

GENERALIZE
When having exterior distractions, it is really difficult to get them focused on the class. So it is important to make activities in which they can relax and enjoy the class. Activities that help them forget about outside and concentrate in the class. Also another way is to make them participate in the class. Making questions, working in pairs, or making a contest among groups can help Ss to get involved into the class unless, it is the theoretical part you are developing.
When there is difficult topic, it is important to go step by step in the grammar part because if Ss don’t get it, it will become challenging when putting into practice. Sometimes we, as teachers, make the mistake of pretending Ss will remember the tenses studied before. That would be perfect for us, but I think it is our job to make a review of the past topics in order to facilitate them to learn a new tense.

For next class, I need to use activities for them to move since I realize they get bored or distracted easily. They need like a couch that is speaking out loud, motivating them in every move. Maybe, they are accustomed to it because of the teacher they have. So I need to get my inside couch for this new group of Ss.

My second entry

DESCRIBE

In my second teaching practicum I had to realize many activities where my Ss could practice Wh-questions using the simple present. As a warm up, they played “dominoes” where they had to match sentences instead of numbers. With this warm up I could notice what they remember about the simple present; some of them had troubles, but then, they could complete it. Then I made I grammar review in which I realized that some of them were kind of lost because they had not been in the previous class, so I needed to go deeper in the “review.” I think it is kind of difficult to teach adults because they understand in a slower way than children or teenagers as I mentioned in the previous entry. However it is good that adults are always willing try and ask as many questions as possible until they get what they have to do. Later, I did some practice which were really helpful for them to understand better the topic and since they love to speak I tried to make almost all the activities in a speaking way. At the end, I believe that it was a successful class because I could see their progress at the end of the class.
ANALYZE
PLAN ACTION
INTERPRET
GENERALIZE
Making speaking activities are really helpful for my Ss. That is what they like, so I had to take advantage of it. Moreover, the main objective of this “diplomado” is that they can understand and communicate in a second language. Looking for speaking activities is difficult even more if I am with adults. I cannot make activities where they have to run, sing or play. But I have to know and pay attention to the activities where they respond successfully.
Having them work in pairs or groups made me realize that they work better and faster because they respond their questions among their classmates, so it makes easier the teacher´s work. However, it doesn´t mean that the teacher will not monitor what they are doing. They will always need the help from the teacher. But group work always works because the Ss feel more confidence to make the activities.

For next class, I need to reinforce the simple present with more activities because they have to pass to another topic, so it is necessary to make many activities. Also I plan to make them explain some little concepts to see how well they have understood the simple present tense. Maybe, little presentations about Wh-questions can help to end with this topic.

First entry (second period)

DESCRIBE

In my first teaching practice, I was a little bit nervous because I had to teach to adults; people that are doctors, licenciados etc. So it was kind of weird teaching to this kind of people; however, I felt it was really good to work with adults since discipline is not the main problem into the classroom even though there were two or three persons to whom I always had to get their attention but not at the same way we do with children. You have to pay attention to words you use to do it. It is difficult but it is just a matter of getting accustomed to deal with them. Moreover, thanks God it was an easy topic; I had to teach “simple present”; nonetheless, it was kind of hard to find activities in which you cannot run, compete or do like activities in which they had to do some physical job because they are adults. They are serious and do not want to play in class. So I think that was the hardest work to do.

In this class, I realized my Ss were willing to work in pairs and speak. They were not afraid of making mistakes when speaking. Even if they did not know the words they invented them. So that was an advantage in some activities. Adults like to work in pairs and compare their answers; they really helped each other. Also my Ss ask a lot of questions, and they want to know the reason for everything so I have to be prepare for any kind of questions they could ask.
Based on this class, I realized that it is necessary to be prepared with many activities since they work quickly, but also it is good to see how to take advantage of the time because you cannot waste time with them. Besides that, I could notice that I cannot give them too much information because they take more time than children to get it. I have to go slow and clear; and something very important is to be patient with them.

For next class, I plan to make activities in which they can work in pairs. Also I plan to find a way to explain grammar in the easiest way as possible in order to give them the information needed to speak. I do not have to overwhelm Ss with too much information and also it is necessary to give examples and how to use every rule or step to use the tense that is been taught.

MY THIRD ENTRY

DESCRIBE

Well in this last practice, I began always with a warm up because I feel that it provides confidence to the students; they relax, and forget about the pressure of a class. This class was about putting into practice the prepositions of time they had studied previously. This class was all about speaking, so I tried to make them participate. One of the activities I developed was “looking for the right preposition.” Each S had one piece of paper with a time word written. Then each S had to look for the correct preposition to write that word in a sentence. I noticed that they liked it because they had to think, share opinions and move around the classroom; moreover, it helped me know how much they managed the topic. So I could see that most of them managed at least the basic information. There were developed more activities in which Ss knew and practice the correct way of the prepositions of time. Although I felt a little disadvantage with this topic since Ss had to use not only the verb to be to form sentences, but also other tenses that they hadn´t studied yet.
ANALYZE
PLAN ACTION
INTERPRET
GENERALIZE
Since Ss had to use not only the verb to be, but also other tenses, it was difficult to find a way in which Ss could make sentences with prepositions of time. So it was really important to provide support and be next to the Ss to help them when necessary. Monitoring is an important aspect because in this way you can see the troubles of your Ss. So besides giving instructions, it is good giving a hand.
Based on this class, I realized that giving an example for what you want them to do is really important because in this way the Ss have a hint or a guide to what they were asked to do. Also it is a model in which they can find support and follow the example in any case they have a doubt. So it is good to try to give an example in each activity.
Next class, I will try to make them work in pairs before speaking in front of a class because I noticed that they feel more comfortable if they discuss their answers before with someone else; it makes them feel more confidence because they can correct mistakes or be sure about their answers. Speaking activities makes them feel afraid; let´s try ways in which you can minimize that fear.
